IBM blow to National micro business

IBM has dropped National Semiconductor’s 6X86 microprocessor from its PC systems, dealing a blow to National’s efforts to expand its microprocessor business as it struggles with manufacturing problems.
National’s Cyrix division has been struggling with manufacturing problems with its microprocessors. CEO Brian Halla recently said that production has been increased and that it expects to meet customer demand at least through the second quarter. National’s problems will help rival Intel, which is seeking to establish its low end Celeron Pentium II as a major chip for low-end PC systems.
