IBM is beefing up its supercomputer line, which is the basis of its chess playing Deep Blue system, with faster PowerPC microprocessors.
The RS/6000 SP supercomputer models are being fitted with new high-end 332MHz PowerPC microprocessors. IBM is building a special version of the RS/6000 SP for the US Department of Energy, in a project that will create the world’s fastest supercomputer when it is completed in 2000. It will be used to simulate nuclear weapons.
