IBM is using the new PowerPC 604e microprocessor to upgrade its RS/6000 SP supercomputer, which is used as the foundation of its Deep Blue chess-playing machine. The more powerful microprocessor will give the RS/6000 SP a significant performance improvement.
IBM says that the upgrade includes new systems software and improves the scalability of the supercomputer. IBM did not say if it will use the improved RS/6000 SP in future chess challenges.
