IBM has introduced a new mainframe family, the S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server Generation 6 (G6), that is the first to make use of its copper chip interconnect technology.
The mainframes come just nine months after IBM introduced its S/390 G5 Server mainframe family and are designed for high volume transaction processing. The G6 mainframes feature copper chip technology with its processors running at 637MHz and delivering up to 1600 MIPS.
IBM says that by using copper chip technology its processors can run up to 50 per cent faster. Copper interconnects speed up processing compared with traditional aluminium based technologies because of copper’s improved conductivity. The G6 systems will be available for shipping on May 28.
