IBM may license its 256Mbit DRAM technology to Taiwan’s Acer, including its advanced 0.18 micron process technology.
According to sources close to IBM, Acer wants IBM’s technology to enable it to produce 256Mbit DRAMs in a bid to escape the low profit margins in current DRAM markets. If Acer is successful, it will be the first company to receive such a license from IBM.
The IBM technology is partially derived from a joint project with Siemens and Fujitsu. There are no details yet on whether IBM’s partners will receive any license payments from the Acer deal.
