ID Data buys GEC smartcard arm
Alex Mayhew-Smith ID Data Systems has acquired the smartcard manufacturing facility GPT Card Technology, a division of GEC’s Marconi Communications arm. The Coventry site, which employs just under 100 people, will be used by ID Data to manufacture and supply smartcards to its various customers. ID Data Systems chairman Peter Cox said he expected the site could turn over ?60m in five years. ID Data, which already has a manufacturing site at Corby in Northants, recently entered a sales and marketing alliance with Toshiba and Toppan of Japan called TTi Card Technologies Europe. The joint venture has won an order to supply Barclays Bank with five million smartcards, which Cox said would be manufactured at the Coventry site. The company will also have an agreement to supply Marconi Communications with smartcards: “It is almost an outsourcing move for GPT,” said Cox. He added that ID Data is likely to invest in new technologies at the manufacturing site.
