iMac production move threatens jobs in Cork
Alex Mayhew-Smith Korean firm LG Electronics has said there is no comment to make on reports that it has secured the production contract for Apple’s iMac computers for its plant in Wales. No one was available for comment from Apple Computers and it appears that the deal between the two firms has yet to be concluded. Apple has yet to confirm reports that an estimated 450 jobs would go from the Cork site following the outsourcing of iMac production. The Cork plant would be left with the production of laptop computers and high performance Macs. The changes by Apple fit in with the firm’s avowed strategy to reduce costs through the use of outsourcing and the reduction of inventory costs.
