Intel figures out its Pentium III specs
Steve Bush Intel has unveiled performance figures for its Pentium III which will be available in 450 and 500MHz versions. Comparing both processors at 450MHz, the company claims that the Pentium III will outperform the Pentium II by 29 per cent on the Futuremark’s MultimediaMark 99 test and 74 per cent on the 3D Winbench 99 3D Lighting and Transformation test. However, Intel points out that “both of these benchmarks take advantage of the capabilities of the Pentium III processor”. When the processors are compared on benchmarks that make no use of the device’s 70 3D multimedia instructions, the Pentium III shows little or no improvement over the Pentium II. For instance, 450MHz figures for SPECfp95 are 13.7 and 13.3 respectively. These Pentium III figures will only get a boost when it is moved to a smaller geometry. “In the middle of the year, we go to 0.18?m and that is when we get the faster speeds,” said an Intel spokesman, talking of the forthcoming 600MHz version.
