Intel is stepping up its pace of high end microprocessor introductions with a planned September launch of a 600MHz Pentium III microprocessor.
According to sources close to Intel, the 600MHz Pentium III will have 256 kilobytes of on-chip Level 2 cache and a 133MHz system bus and will be priced at about $760 in volume orders. The device will be the first Pentium III with on-chip L2 cache, following similar chips in Intel’s low end Celeron line.
The new microprocessor will raise the bar for Intel rival Advanced Micro Devices which is preparing 500MHz versions of its Pentium III competitor K7. With the introduction of the 600MHz Pentium III, prices on Intel’s recently introduced 500MHz Pentium III will drop from $625 to $299 each in volume orders.
