Iridium gets US backing
Tom Foremski The financially troubled Iridium satellite phone venture has won a major contract with the US Department of Defense (DoD). The DoD has placed a $219m order over three years for the purchase of Iridium satellite portable products and related voice and paging services. Motorola, a chief investor in Iridium, will provide the phones. ‘The government’s use of commercial technology is very encouraging,’ said Motorola’s Ron Taylor. Iridium has a special gateway dedicated to US government use in Hawaii.
