Iridium to go live this summer
Steve Bush Iridium will use its satellite communications system for internal traffic in the early summer with a public launch for voice traffic services set for September 23. Testing of the 66 satellite system is already well under way. “The satellite constellation works pretty well, the first call to Europe came through the Italian gateway very recently,” said Thomas Loewenthal, chairman of Iridium in Europe. If all goes well, the Iridium satellite constellation will be completed this week. The penultimate launch on a Chinese rocket put up two satellites last week and the final three are due to take off from California tomorrow (Thursday). Iridium is GSM-based at between 1.6 and 1.7GHz. Despite the distance, handset power is claimed to be only 0.6W, less than terrestrial GSM.
