J?rgen Knorr takes chair for MEDEA programme
David Manners MEDEA has appointed Dr J?rgen Knorr, ex-President of Siemens Semiconductor, to be the chairman of its board of directors. Knorr takes over from Horst Nasko who successfully initiated the MEDEA programme. MEDEA has secured approval for government and EU funding of 44 projects involving 47 companies from nine countries. Knorr has been a prime mover in the resurgence of European microelectronics, taking over as boss of Siemens Semiconductor in 1983 when Siemens was some four years behind American microelectronics technology with revenues of DM800m, and leaving in 1996 when it had world-leading technology and revenues exceeding DM5bn. Knorr has served on pan-European bodies like EECA and MEDEA’s predecessor JESSI, promoting joint R&D in European microelectronics and pushing for national and European government support for the industry. Knorr is an internationalist, initiating the joint Siemens/ IBM microelectronics research partnership which was then expanded to include Motorola.
