Lack of ICs on JavaOne show stage
Tom Foremski Java chips will be missing from this week’s JavaOne trade show in the US. Although Java use is growing rapidly, Sun is facing problems in defending its cross-platform vision especially with Microsoft tailoring its Java products for the Windows platform. “Sun and its partners such as IBM will probably attack Microsoft’s Java strategy,” said analyst Ron Rappaport, at US market research firm Zona Research. But Java chips will be scarce at the show. “Sun hasn’t allowed any of its semiconductor partners to license PicoJava 2 yet, even though it was announced last year,” said Jim Turley, of market research firm MicroDesign Resources. The show will include new Java products and software development tools, and a key focus will be on Sun’s efforts to protect Java’s write-once-run anywhere strategy.
