LG Semicon has said it will open its ?1.2bn semiconductor plant in south Wales in the second half of next year. This has been interpreted as a further 6 month delay to the Newport, Gwent wafer fab project which continues to be affected by financial shock waves from the economic crisis in South Korea.
Company managing director Chong Suk-Lee told the BBC on Tuesday that the Welsh fab would open: “Hopefully some time at the end of next year.” This would represent an additional six month delay on the original start date for the plant which could ultimately employ 1,700 staff.
There are also unconfirmed reports that LG may be looking for a partner to share the investment cost of putting 0.20?m semiconductor wafer production technology in the Newport plant.
