Lithium ion battery demand set to rocket
Tom Foremski
The demand for lithium ion polymer batteries is predicted to result in a $1 billion market by 2007 thanks to increasing numbers of portable electronic devices.
US market research firm Kline & Company says that lithium ion polymer battery technology will become the dominant battery technology especially in cellular communications and portable computer devices. Cellular communications products will account for 50 percent of lithium ion polymer battery applications.
The key factor in the growth of lithium ion polymer battery technology is that it can be produced in a wide variety of shapes including thin plastic films, allowing the batteries to more easily fit into small electronic devices. Kline predicts that the increase in demand for lithium ion polymer batteries will create new business opportunities because established lithium ion battery producers will seek to protect their markets and not cannibalise their current sales with the new battery technology.
