Lucent announces $1bn four year deal with AT&T

Lucent Technologies announced a $1bn four year deal to supply former parent AT&T with cellular network equipment.
The equipment will be used to expand AT&T’s TDMA digital cellular networks in the US plus develop new types of services such as wireless Internet. Lucent won the contract against competition from Ericsson and Northern Telecom.
AT&T said that it is planning to spend more than $2bn in expanding its wireless communications networks and upgrade them for third generation services. As part of this effort, Lucent said that its researchers are working with their AT&T counterparts, on the development of next generation base stations that support Internet protocols.
