Manufacturers gaining confidence, says BCC
Alex Mayhew-Smith The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has released mixed news about the state of the manufacturing sector. The organisation, which represents more than 120,000 businesses in the UK, said decline in the export market has eased and manufacturers confidence has “risen significantly”, with the worst of the downturn over. However, manufacturers also shed staff at the fastest rate for six years during the last quarter. A BCC spokesman said the last quarter was the crunch time, where manufacturing saw the shock wave of job losses resulting from the slow down at the end of last year. The quarterly survey from the BCC showed that manufacturers are also suffering at home with sales in the UK market at their worst since Autumn 1992. According to the Engineering Employers Federation, however, the electronics sector continues to enjoy a small growth of four per cent.
