Micron Technology is to acquire US graphics chip maker Rendition, following closely on the heels of its deal for Texas Instruments’ DRAM business.
The $88 million stock swap deal with Rendition will give Micron a chance to lessen its reliance on DRAM chips over the long term and compete in the fast growing graphics accelerator chip market. Micron plans to produce chips that combine graphics acceleration with DRAM, which could give it a key competitive edge in a crowded market.
“Graphics accelerators represent an ideal application that takes advantage of Micron’s newly developed embedded DRAM technology. The joining of forces between Micron Technology and Rendition positions us to service the graphics accelerator market in a unique way by having ownership of the architecture, design, and manufacturing of these devices,” said Micron CEO Steve Appleton.
The two companies recently had announced Socket X, a way of integrating graphics chips with DRAM. Although the companies have offered Socket X as an open industry standard, no backers have yet been announced.
