Microsoft in AT&T deal bid
Tom Foremski Microsoft will invest $5bn in AT&T in a bid that will help promote its Windows CE operating system. The deal calls for AT&T to increase its use of Windows CE in set-top boxes for broadband Internet access and video services. Microsoft has had a tough time competing against other embedded operating systems which have real-time capabilities, something which Windows CE currently lacks. AT&T wants to be a major player in cable TV markets with its recent bid for cable TV company MediaOne which will give it a 30 per cent US market share. The deal with AT&T also calls for Microsoft to purchase MediaOne’s 29.9 per cent interest in cable firm Telewest Communications. AT&T said it will use the Microsoft investment for capital investments. Microsoft recently set up a venture with Intel to look at using Windows CE and the x86 architecture in consumer electronics applications.
