Microtec to sell CE
Richard Ball Microtec, the software arm of Mentor Graphics, is to sell Windows CE for embedded systems developers. The company’s compilers and debugger will be tailored to work with the Microsoft operating system. Developers have many reasons for using Windows CE, said Doug Follett, sales engineer with Microtec. Some will buy it for the graphical user interface, giving their systems the Microsoft look and feel. Others will buy Windows CE because of the hardware drivers that come with it. “All of these drivers, such as for PC Cards or a mouse, are difficult to find for embedded systems,” said Follett. With Windows CE, the developer just writes to the Windows API, irrespective of the underlying hardware.
