Mobile phones will health warning says EU
Melanie Reynolds
Health warning labels will be fitted to mobile phones if a European Parliament recommendation is accepted.
The recommendation is seeking to eliminate any possible public health hazard by limiting public exposure to non-ionising electromagnetic radiation. It singles out mobile phones in particular due to the proximity and length of exposure involved. If accepted, the proposal’s recommendations will be put in place by January 1, 2001.
The labels would provide information on the fields generated by electrical equipment as a function of distance. The information would be based on scientific documentation which already exists. However, there is also a call for EU members to promote and review research relevant to electromagnetic fields and human health as part of their national research programmes.
