Model Technology to supply simulator to Xilinx designers
Richard Ball Simulator company Model Technology has announced a series of collaboration deals in the run up to DAC. The company is to supply evaluation versions of its hardware description language (HDL) simulator, ModelSim, to all Xilinx FPGA designers using Foundation or Alliance series software. “Traditionally, only Asic designers have had access to top quality HDL tools,” said Kevin Curtis, general manager of Model Technology. The two companies have also agreed to co-operate in research and development to improve the use of HDLs in programmable logic design. In another announcement, the latest version of SuperVISE from ICL’s design automation group has been designed to work with ModelSim. The ICL tool takes a description of the design at a very high level of abstraction. After translating to VHDL, ModelSim is used to simulate the design. Model Tech recently signed a deal in which it sold 3,000 licenses for its ModelSim VHDL simulator to a single company. The un-named company will use the simulator in computer, networking and telecom designs. Some 300 designers will use the licenses. Multiple instances of the tool for each designer will allow faster simulation of a design. “We’ve seen customers buy two or three licenses per user, but this is the first order of this size,” said John Ott, sales and marketing director. Model Tech, a subsidiary of Mentor Graphics, saw revenues increase 61 per cent last year.
