Motorola Flexes paging muscles in Germany
Jon Mainwaring Motorola’s proprietary paging protocol Flex has finally been adopted by a paging operator within the European Union, leading to speculation that it could eventually be adopted by UK operators. German network paging operator Deutsche Funkruf (DFR) launched the Flex service last week, and Motorola now expects a domino-style adoption of the technology to take place throughout the EU. “The Flex protocol is already established in over 90 per cent of the paging world, including Central and Eastern Europe, and it is now starting to be adopted in Western Europe,” said Greg Nelson, general manager of Motorola’s European Paging Subscriber Division. Although the European Commission favours its ERMES paging standard, and recommended government agencies push the standard, confusion over more recent legislation concerning freedom of choice has opened the way for DFR to adopt Flex (EW, June 4).
