Steve Bush Motorola has unveiled what it believes is the most complex microcontroller yet. Called the MPC555, the 32-bit PowerPC microcontroller has 6.7 million transistors, 448kbyte of flash, 26kbyte of RAM and more peripherals than previous chips. It has been designed to be able to control a car engine and transmission in a single chip. Features include two timer processing units – each of which includes a 20Mips 32-bit MicroRisc core – a CAN 2.0 controller, two A/D converters and a multi-function serial I/O block.
