Motorola plans to lay off about 380 workers in its Singapore operations as it continues with a major reorganisation that will eventually cut as many as 15,000 jobs.
Motorola said that the Singapore job cuts were necessary because of a steep decline in its Asia based business. The company employs a total of 4200 staff in Singapore and it is the first layoffs since it founded its Singapore operations 24 years ago.
Texas Instruments last week also announced that it will layoff workers in its Singapore plants as part of plans to cut 3500 jobs worldwide. Texas Instruments says it is also suffering from lower demand for its products in Asian markets.
