Motorola will sell its Scottish based smart card chip business to Atmel for an undisclosed sum as it focuses on becoming more of a systems solutions company.
Atmel is buying Motorola’s Smart Information Transfer (SIT) business which is largely located in East Kilbride. Motorola retains the chip fab but will transfer designs and other related assets. Motorola did not say if there will be layoffs related to the sale.
“This planned transaction will establish Atmel as one of the world’s leaders in the Smart Card IC,” said Atmel CEO George Perlegos. “In addition, Motorola’s SIT business will provide Atmel with a broad array of technologically advanced products including their advanced security features.”
Motorola says it is still committed to the smart card business despite a slow adoption of the technology in the US and it is working on smart card applications.
