National goes with Rambus
Tom Foremski National Semiconductor has bought a licence for the Rambus high speed memory interface. The company will use the memory interface as part of its future PC system-on-a-chip products such as its MediaPC family of chips. “As our integrated processors approach speeds of one gigahertz, high memory bandwidth and low latency become ever more critical to achieving the optimum balance of performance and cost,” said Jean-Louis Bories, National’s Cyrix Group’s executive v-p. National claims the Rambus interface provides the performance necessary for 3D acceleration and fast DVD playback.
