National in PC sales warning
Tom Foremski National Semiconductor is the latest company to warn of slowing PC sales. “We are going into the fourth quarter more cautiously than we would have expected three months ago because of competitive uncertainties in the personal computer markets,” said National CEO Brian Halla. National reported a loss of $27.2m for its fiscal third quarter and a drop in demand for its Cyrix microprocessors. US market research firm International Data Corporation predicts that PC revenues will increase just 4.8 per cent this year to $178.4bn. “It explains why PC vendors are moving at a frenetic pace to diversify their business models and revenue sources,” said senior IDC analyst Bruce Stephen.
