National Semiconductor revealed that it has left the Sematech research consortium due to financial reasons.
National was a founding member of Sematech and its departure signals a less important role for Sematech. National said it left Sematech at the end of last year but chose not to reveal the departure until now.
The chip downturn and lower revenues was a key reason for National’s decision to leave Sematech but the company says it is still committed to spending as much as 11 per cent of its sales on research and development.
Sematech was formed in 1987 as a response to US chip makers losing market share to competitors and its mission is to help develop new chip process technologies. Sematech recently extended full membership privledges to its non-US based members.
