National Semiconductor’s wafer fab in Greenock, Scotland has been mostly spared from the company’s 1,400 announced job losses. “Less than 20 people have been made redundant at Greenock,” said a National spokesman.
The bulk of the job losses are at the company’s Santa Clara headquarters. National is closing its older 5in and 6in fabs, accounting for 560 jobs and 440 jobs respectively. The remaining 400 losses – 20 of which are at Greenock – are occurring worldwide.
The company recently warned that it expects a loss for its current fourth fiscal quarter. Despite the cuts, National says it is still on target for introducing a PC system-on-a-chip by the summer.
