A second generation MPact media processor has been shown by SGS-Thomson Microelectronics (STM). Designed for the low end PC market, MPact 2 carries out 2D and 3D graphics acceleration, and decodes DVD video and AC-3 audio. Software is under development that will allow the chip to run a fax/modem and videophone.
“Compared with MPact 1, the biggest difference is the performance of 3D graphics,” said Vittorio Gambolati, market development manager at STM. “The chip has improved bandwidth because of the two channels of Rambus DRAM.”
This gives a 1.3Gbyte/s video data transfer rate. STM is now generating reference designs with MPact 2 on the PC motherboard or as a standard graphics card. SGS-Thomson is one of three licensees of the Mpact media processor developed by US firm Chromatic Research.
