New name and jobs at Cellnet
Melanie Reynolds Mobile phone operator Cellnet is to create 1,500 jobs and change its name to BT Cellnet in a move designed to take advantage of its close association with BT. The company will recruit 1,500 employees over the next year. These include engineering jobs for technology functions such as systems and radio planning. Cellnet, which is the UK’s second largest mobile phone operator, denied that the change had any effect on ownership of Cellnet despite the restriction on BT buying out fellow parent Securicor having recently been lifted by the government. The company is 60 per cent owned by BT with the remaining share being held by Securicor.
