Nortel has set up a joint venture with power firm United Utilities to develop and market consumer products based on its Internet over the power mains technology.
The venture known as NOR.WEB DPL, taking its name from the Norweb power distribution company which United Utilities owns, says that it has signed agreements with ten power utilities round the world, which are interested in deploying the Digital PowerLine technology. So far the only UK utility to commit to the technology is Norweb Communications, the others are in Sweden, Germany, Holland and Singapore.
The system, which was demonstrated at the CeBIT exhibition in Germany last week, can transmit data at around 1Mbit/s over electricity power cabling direct into peoples’ homes. The first commercial deployment is expected in September.
