PCB design tool specialist Orcad has bought out its UK distributor ARS Microsystems in a bid to extend its European presence.
“The ARS management and all the employees are staying in place and we want, immediately, to take on five new people,” says Mike Bosworth, chairman, president and CEO of Oregon-based Orcad.
Orcad needs the extra people to expand its activities in its fastest growth areas: programmable logic and its intelligent agent-based components search engine, which it calls Component Information System (CIS). This currently accounts for five per cent of Orcad’s projected $50m revenues this year.
Costing ?2,000 and working on a PC, CIS searches internal company databases, MRP systems, Internet-based components databases and distributors’ databases to find relevant components for system designers. “Engineers spend an estimated 30 per cent of their time researching component choice,” says Bosworth.
