PC chiefs in talks over US encryption exports
Tom Foremski Leading computer industry executives will meet with the FBI over US encryption exports. The meeting will include Microsoft CEO Bill Gates, Netscape Communications CEO Jim Barksdale, Novell CEO Eric Schmidt as well as leading US legislators. It is taking place amid Congress debates on several bills that aim to lift restrictions on the export of powerful encryption products, which critics say are costing US high-tech firms billions of dollars in lost sales. The FBI, however, is concerned that such exports will make it easier for terrorist and criminal groups to operate. Industry officials counter the claims by saying these groups already use such technologies. The Clinton administration supports the FBI but it has recently relaxed export restrictions to countries which have close US ties.
