Philips/Shell ease petrol payment
Steve Bush Philips Semiconductors and Shell have launched a contactless petrol payment scheme in Holland. Called Easypay, the system will be introduced in 100 large Shell outlets throughout the country, with the option of being extended to the 650 remaining outlets. Payment is made directly at the pump, although later this year it will be extended to associated shop purchases. Easypay is based on Philips Semiconductors’ Mifare chip which, in this case, is embedded in a transponder key ring. The key ring is held near a reader in the fuel pump and the transaction is authorised by typing a PIN into a key pad.
