Police alarm bells ring over Millennium Bug

Severe disruption to police, fire and local authority services can be expected as a result of the Millennium Bug, claims Taskforce 2000, the UK’s independent watchdog.
In its latest report on the country’s readiness for the year 2000, police forces in particular are singled out. “They have left it very, very late,” said Robin Guenier, executive director of Taskforce 2000. “A number of police authorities are not planning to complete their reviews until the final quarter.”
This, he said, gives them no time to remedy any problems. Six authorities are giving cause for “great concern”, while two more are at serious risk, said Guenier Fire brigades are also at risk of disruption, while local authorities have “done virtually nothing”, said Taskforce 2000.
The government’s own Millennium Bug watchdog body, Action 2000, acknowledges that problems exist. Not a single police force or NHS organisation is free of risk, it said.
