Rechargeable lithium battery removes safety fears

US firm SRI International has developed the first rechargeable lithium ion battery that is non-flammable, representing a major safety feature for notebook computer users. SRI says that it has discovered a non-flammable electrolyte that replaces the inflammable organic electrolytes used in lithium ion batteries. It will offer its electrolyte technology to battery manufacturers under license agreements.
