Redundancies at National as slow demand bites

National Semiconductor will layoff 1400 workers or about ten per cent of its work force in response to slowing demand for its products and a warning of a loss for its current fiscal quarter.
Most of the job cuts will be at its headquarters and due to the closure of its older 5 and 6 inch wafer fabs in Silicon Valley. The move will result in a charge against earnings of as much as $70m.
National says that the layoffs will not affect its plans to introduce a single chip PC by the middle of this year. The move follows a recent announcement that competitor Intel will reduce its work force by 3,000 staff.
