Rethink at Nortel favours UK plant
Tom Foremski Nortel Networks’ manufacturing plant in Monkstown, Northern Ireland has benefited from a reorganisation of the Canadian telecoms firm’s global business. Nortel plans to sell or close manufacturing plants in Europe, US and Canada, laying off 4,000 staff. The Monkstown plant has been named as one of just seven global systems manufacturing centres. The reorganisation, which will take over three years to carry out, is expected to consolidate operations at seven sites in Canada, the US, Northern Ireland, Ireland and France. Nortel’s other two UK manufacturing plants at Paignton and Cwmcarn, Wales are not affected, according to a spokeswoman for the company. The fixed radio systems division was transferred from Paignton last year. As part of the cost reduction programme, the company will also outsource most of its PCB assembly and electromechanical subsystems manufacturing at all sites. The company says it will shift its business towards the manufacture of Internet Protocol switching equipment.
