RF careers initiative wins industry support
Melanie Reynolds A joint industry and government initiative to encourage more students to take up careers in RF has entered the second phase with over 20 companies involved. “We welcome this follow-up initiative and see it as a major step forward to address the chronic shortage of skilled resources from which we all suffer in this area,” said Plextek managing director Dr Colin Smithers, one of the sponsors continuing into the second phase. The radio frequency engineers education initiative aims to produce an extra 50 radio engineering graduates a year. The decision to continue the campaign is due to its success in achieving the required extra graduates in previous years. Five universities are involved in the scheme: Bradford, Bristol, Portsmouth, Surrey and York. The Open University is also offering distance learning courses. All the universities will receive financial assistance to equip labs. The scheme also calls for an increase in company placements. For more information visit www.rfeei.org.uk
