Roche hits the road to preach high-tech
Political correspondent Treasury Minister Barbara Roche is to go on a nationwide tour to encourage large electronics firms to invest in their small scale brethren. She will visit large companies throughout Britain to preach the tax and technological advantages of such ‘corporate venturing’. Roche believes the cash and support of major firms in high-tech sectors could help smaller, leading edge firms prosper. The former trade and industry minister, now financial secretary, will highlight the government’s draft proposals to allow corporation tax relief on 20 per cent of any investment by larger firms in small ones held for a minimum of five years in ordinary new shares. But she will stress the advantages for the large companies and the sector as a whole. In return for the cash support, the investing company would get first refusal of new technology developed by the smaller firm, and the high-tech sector in Britain as a whole would benefit. In a series of regional Take it to the Boardroom tours Roche will concentrate on the electronics, IT and pharmaceutical sectors. Since her days in opposition, Roche has been impressed with the way this system has worked in the US to the benefit of companies large and small and the industrial sectors they operate in.
