RS starts talking Japanese
Alex Mayhew-Smith Electrocomponents has announced plans to set up a branch of its distribution business in Japan. The company, which distributes electronics components in the UK through its RS Components subsidiary, says that Japan is potentially the second largest market in the world for next day distribution and that the service is not currently available in the country. Jeff Hewitt, finance director of Electrocomponents, said: “We now have a team of 25 in Japan and the launch of the business is set to take place in March 1999. The next year will be spent firming up logistics and tactics.” In Japan, components are typically purchased from market stalls in Tokyo, according to Hewitt. “It will be a very substantial market,” he added.
