S3 aims to recapture market share with new chip

In a bid to recapture lost market share, US graphics chip firm S3 has introduced its Savage3D graphics accelerator chip, claiming the industry’s top performance.
S3 says that Savage offers 125 million pixels per second processing and a 128-bit architecture that boosts Advanced Graphics Port (AGP) displays by more than 400 percent.
A key feature of the chip is what S3 calls single cycle trilinear filtering which improves image quality, compared with traditional bilinear filtering, by removing motion artifacts for smoother images.
The chip includes a proprietary texture compression algorithm, which compresses image data by as much as one sixth of its original size, essentially doubling the chip’s frame buffer size.
