Samsung begins Alpha production

Samsung has begun manufacturing Alpha microprocessors under an agreement with Digital Equipment. The first Alpha versions from Samsung operate at 533MHz and it has plans for a 600MHz variant to be available by the end of this year.
Samsung said it aims to produce 4,000 Alpha microprocessors this year, 110,000 in 1998, ramping up to one million units in 1999. The addition of Samsung as an Alpha microprocessor manufacturer is an important boost for the architecture and should help encourage system makers to adopt the chip. The Alpha uses a RISC architecture that has been optimised for multimedia functions, such as decoding digital video and 3D graphics processing.
