SEMI call over skills
David Manners SEMI CHIEF Stan Myers has made a call to solve Europe’s twin problems of a lack of skilled high-tech workers and a structurally high unemployment rate. Myers, president of the semiconductor equipment manufacturers’ trade body SEMI (Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International), was speaking yesterday (Tuesday) at the Semicon Europa trade show in Geneva. “It’s a global issue”, said Myers. “SEMI is going to take a lead to be the facilitator for all the organisations in Europe and across the world to convince governments that we face a key challenge.” Walter Roessger, SEMI’s European boss, told EW: “There are 18 million unemployed people in Europe. Europe has to manage high-tech and make it into a major engine of growth. SEMI is the first industry organisation to tackle this skills problem.”
