Signing off e-commerce
Richard Ball Electronic signatures have been approved for use in e-commerce applications by the European Union’s telecoms council. At a meeting of the council last Thursday (April 22), all EU member states agreed a common position on the use of electronic signatures. This will be incorporated into a European Directive. Michael Wills, the DTI’s telecoms minister, said the UK will put the directive in the upcoming Electronic Commerce Bill. “We welcome the common position that was reached on this important electronic commerce measure,” he said. Once member states implement the directive, an electronic signature will be as legal as the paper version.
