Silicon on Insulator wafers gaining in market presence
David Manners Silicon on Insulator (SOI) wafers are in production at 12 companies, while another 18 are using it in R&D with the expectation of moving into production, said Andr? IBM has run SOI PowerPCs, SRAMs and Asics and, according to IBM’s Aidan Kelly, is preparing a library of SOI Asic cells on 0.15?m technology for launch within the next twelve months. “We can already prototype SOI Asics,” said Kelly. Auberton-Herv? said firms using SOI include; Philips for both high voltage (60V and 150V) chips and high frequency (2GHz) RF ICs, Honeywell which has a 300 person SOI fab for space and high temperature chips, Allied Signal which is also running an SOI line, and US displays house Kopin. SOITEC has a capacity of 200,000 wafers a year. Recently it sold 31 per cent of the company for d50m.
