Smartcard keyring pays for petrol
Roy Rubenstein A contactless smartcard, in the form of a car key ring tag – is being developed to help drivers pay for petrol. The development, by Scottish petrol pump manufacturer Wayne Dresser and Texas Instruments, will be much faster than drivers swiping a credit card at the pump and will avoid adults having to leave children in the car to settle up. The firm based near Edinburgh will have sole rights to market the tag, a form of which is on trial in 3,000 US petrol stations. The Wayne Trac tag works by sending out a signal to a box on the pump which reads the credit details of the motorist and registers the transaction with a special credit card centre.
