SOITEC hits 300
David Manners SOITEC of France, the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer-maker, has delivered its first 300mm wafers to customers for sampling. It is also nearing completion of a $50m plant with the capacity to make one million 8in. wafers a year by the end of 1999. SOITEC’s plant will be completed by June, said Dr Andr?-Jacques Auberton-Herve?, the president of SOITEC, at the recent Semicon Europa show in Geneva. It has been built in response to 1997’s 30 per cent increase in demand for SOI wafers for applications such as smart power, micromachining and opto-electronics. By the end of next year, the cost of an SOI wafer will be under twice the cost of a standard silicon epitaxial wafer, said Auberton-Herve?. SOI technology is useful in low power, low voltage applications such as portable products.
